Emotional
Freedom Technique (EFT)
Emotional Freedom Technique
(EFT) arises from the new field of Energy Psychology (EP). This
work wells well with or as an alternative to systematic desensitization
and is an effective tool in treating BDD symptoms. Instead of systematically
tightening and relaxing muscle groups the person instead taps points
on the body that are energy fields which are the same as in acupuncture
treatment without the use of needles. Based on ancient Chinese medicine;
EFT can be viewed as a form of "psychological acupuncture." The
basic tenet is that emotional problems are caused by a disruption in
the body’s bioenergetics system. The disruption may manifest as emotional
cognitive or behavioral problems, and one can best ameliorate those
problems by directly addressing the disrupted energy. This life energy
is known by many names in many cultures-as chi, ki, life energy, even
electromagnetic energy. EFT is derived from Roger Callahan’s Thought
Field Therapy. Several acupuncture points are stimulated by tapping
with the fingers while holding in the mind the troubled thoughts or
feelings. Using 0-10 subjective units of distress scale (SUDS) derived
from behavioral therapy approaches the client initially assesses the
intensity of the problem, and then attempts to get the intensity level
of the problem down to zero using an EFT tapping protocol. Often, this
can be accomplished rapidly, which makes it a powerful intervention,
as well as a skill that can be used independently as needed. I have
found in practice that EFT is effective in treating compulsions and
trauma. EFT, in my opinion, is a very useful tool used in conjunction
with holistic psychotherapy.
